Snowblind – My New Book!

Snowblind is out now.

I can’t believe how long this book took to finish. Just over two years! If you want to skip all the waffle and jump straight to a sample click here

Inspiration 1 …

The story had been percolating in my mind for a long time. Working with teenage boys and endlessly scrolling through social media had exposed me to the shifting online word where misogyny and misinformation was shaping the ways some boys were understanding what it was to be a man.

Louis Theroux’s Manosphere, Jack Thorne’s Adolescence, and the coverage of influencers such as Andrew Tate would worry any mother of a teenage son and it got me wondering … how would a modern, left-leaning, feminist mother who went on marches for the rights of women feel if her son turned towards these right wing influencers? How would you cope loving a child you didn’t recognise any more?

Inspiration 2

A few years ago my family went to Cumbria. Alongside my brother’s family we explored the magnificent mountains and lakes. I’d never seen landscape like it. It was so overwhelming it was almost eerie – it made me feel tiny and insignificant.

And then disaster struck. The wifi was broken. The nearest place to get a phone signal was up a hill and across a field of sheep. You can imagine the horror on our teen and tweenagers’ faces when they realised they would have to rely on talking to each other and playing old-fashioned garden games and, on rainy days, scrabble and cards!

For the first time in years none of us could look anything up, check a map, watch Netflix, call, text, or email anyone. It was humbling to realise how reliant we all were on our phones and wifi. Most terrifying of all, however, was the thought that kept crossing my mind. What would we do if anyone tried to hurt us? How would we get help?

Inspiration 3

Then I saw this …

and it made me think … imagine having no wifi, no phone signal, and a snowstorm so heavy you couldn’t leave the house?

Sinead, Deborah, and Mary

The idea wouldn’t leave me alone. Three very different women. All of them going through a difficult time with their teenage child.

Sinead’s son spends all his time online or at the gym. He’s recently bulked up and listens to his friends more than he does his left wing, feminist mother.

Recently divorced Deborah needs to reconnect with the daughter she’s overlooked for years as she pursued her successful career as an influencer.

Mary is still reeling after losing her husband the year before. As she struggles out of her cave of grief she finally sees how her son has been traumatised not only by the loss of his father, but by the relentless bullying he is suffering at school.

The holiday is Cumbria is a chance for the women to get away from it all and spend some quality time with their children.

But nothing is what it seems. And as the snow begins to fall, trapping them at the foot of the great mountains, trust begins to fracture as they realise someone is targeting the children.

You can protect your child from anything … except the truth.

Every child thinks they know their mother. One of them is wrong.
